How to help ?
If you appreciate our wargames community and would like to help out in some way, here are some things you could do.
Interested ? Contact us on #social of irc.overthewire.org or send a mail to otwvolunteer AT singularity DOT be.
Donate
Keeping the servers running costs us several thousands of dollars each year. If it were not for the financial backing of a couple generous donors, our servers would have disappeared a long time ago. We gladly accept any donations, even if you have only $1 to donate.
Donations can be made through PayPal. Please contact us if you require a different means of donating money.
Volunteer
Not cash-strapped ? Become a volunteer instead!
Volunteers are the driving force behind this community, the people who do the actual work. Without them, we'd have no wargames, no IRC server, no website. Unfortunately, the time that these volunteers can invest is limited and we would appreciate it if you could supplement their efforts with some of your own time.
We are looking for volunteers to take care of these tasks:
- Create a logo
- After all this time, OverTheWire is still without a logo. A shame really, as a logo would allow us to promote the community more easily on conferences, events or other websites. Our logo should reflect that we are a hacker community with wargames. It should be simple, easily recognizable, contain not too much colors and in a vectorgraphics format (preferably SVG).
- Maintain or moderate the forums
- The idea behind the forum is to have a place where community-members can help other community-members. However, the forums are rarely used because noone bothers to maintain them. We need volunteers brave enough to admin the forums and/or moderate the different threads.
- Build a central registration system
- All our webservices use OpenID for authentication. But OpenID has its drawbacks. The major hurdle is that almost no software supports it. What websoftware typically does support, is using external databases for user authentication. We would like to have a central user database, complete with registration form and profile editor, that allows users to register and login with OpenID. Other websoftware in our community will then be able to use that user database as a backend and allow single-signon.
Other ways to help out
- Help others
- Be nice, give beginners a helping hand. You can do this by joining the IRC channels, or by replying to forum posts
- Promote us
- Giving a presentation at a security conference ? Know people who want to learn about computer security ? Can you sneak in an advertisement in a newspaper ? You can promote OverTheWire! The more people know about our community, the bigger and more fun it will get.
- Tell us your ideas
- If you have a great idea, please tell us about it !
